The Municipal Council was established in 1936, the Municipal Council area was about 54.5 Sq.kms. It was elevated to the status of Municipal Corporation from 8th December 1982 and simultaneously including eighteen peripheral villages making total area under its jurisdiction to 138.5 Sq. kms. extended its limits.

The city is divided in 83 electoral wards and each ward is represented by a Corporator elected by the people from each ward. There are two Committees, General Body and Standing Committee headed by the Mayor and the Chairman respectively.

The administration is headed by the Municipal Commissioner; an I.A.S. Officer, assisted by the other officers of different departments.

Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is the local civil body. It is divided in six zones.

Aurangabad contributes one seat to the Lok Sabha. The seat is currently held by Mr. Chandrakant Khaire, MP of the Shiv Sena party. And two seats for Assembly, Aurangabad West (Indian National Congress) and Aurangabad East (National Congress Party).

Judiciary Aurangabad is a bench of the Bombay High Court.Which is situated on Jalna Road, Aurangabad.There is also a District and Sesions Court in the city.

A Municipal Corporation, One Zilla Parishad, One Cantonment and Six Municipal Councils are there in the district.

32-Jalna Parlimentary Constituency Comprises of 189-Sillod Legislative Assembly Constituency. More-over seven villages of Soygaon Taluka of this District are included in 188-Bhokardan Legislative Assembly segment, of 32-Jalna Parlimentry Constituency.
